Georgetown, Guyana – Guyana is on track to achieving universal secondary education by 2026, with 20 new secondary schools scheduled to open across the country by September 2025, according to Minister of Education Priya Manickchand.

During a press briefing on Wednesday, Minister Manickchand reaffirmed the government’s commitment to ensuring that every child in Guyana has access to quality secondary education.

“Only in Georgetown, we have built and are going to be opening shortly the new Christ Church Secondary, the new St. George’s Secondary, and the new St. Mary’s Secondary,” the Minister announced.

In addition to the new builds, the reconstruction and expansion of several prominent schools in the capital—such as St. Rose’s, Queen’s College, Bishop’s High School, and St. Stanislaus College—are underway or nearing completion.

The Ministry of Education is aggressively expanding infrastructure across rural and hinterland regions, with:

  • 5 new secondary schools under construction in Region One
  • 4 in Region Seven
  • 3 in Region Eight
  • 7 in Region Nine

“This is happening all over the country,” Manickchand said, highlighting the scale of the project as a nationwide push to eliminate education gaps.

Alongside infrastructure upgrades, the government has added nearly 4,000 teachers to the public education system over the last two years. The Ministry is also continuing efforts to modernize the national curriculum to meet the demands of a more connected and dynamic world.

Despite the progress, some projects have encountered delays. The Christ Church Secondary is reportedly one year behind schedule, while Tucville Secondary is three months past its original timeline. However, the Ministry says steps are being taken to ensure all 20 schools are operational by the start of the 2025–2026 academic year.
