A 23-year-old male pedestrian lost his life on Saturday night along the Timehri Public Road, East Bank Demerara (EBD), in the vicinity of Bounty Farm Limited after a white Toyota Allion motorcar (# PMM 4120) that was driven by an off-duty cop slammed into him.
The fatal accident which claimed the life of Charles Williams, of Timehri Public Road, EBD, took place around 20:20h on the day in question and involved a 27-year-old Police Constable.
Reports are that the policeman was proceeding South along the Eastern side of Timehri Public road when Williams, who had been walking North on the Western side of the said road, “suddenly ran from West to East across the road” into the path of the vehicle (#PMM 4120).
The 27-year-old Police Constable told investigators that upon observing this, he quickly tried to apply brakes and pulled in a South-Westernly direction to avoid a collision, but due to the short distance, the front left side of his car (#PMM 4120) collided with the pedestrian.
Williams “fell onto the bonnet, windscreen, and then onto the road way” and received injuries to his head and about his body.
According to a police statement, the 23-year-old pedestrian was then picked up by the police and public spirited citizens in an unconscious condition, placed in a motor van (# GYY 9933) and escorted to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
His body was then taken to the GPHC’s mortuary for storage.
The Police Constable’s vehicle (# PMM 4120) was subsequently lodged at the Madewini Police Outpost to be examined by a licensing and certifying Officer.
“A breathalyzer test was conducted on the driver of the motor car and revealed 0.0 % alcohol. The off-duty cop (driver) is presently at Timehri police station under close arrest. Further investigations are in progress.”
