549 SPEEDING TICKETS ISSUED IN 5 DAYS, AG WARNS OF ARREST, LICENSE SUSPENSION

Since the official rollout of the Safe Road Intelligent System (SRIS) on April 7, a staggering 549 motorists have already been flagged for exceeding the speed limit, sparking renewed government warnings about road safety and legal accountability.

The figures were released as part of the initial assessment of the system’s performance, which uses automated cameras and radar sensors to detect traffic violations in real-time.

In response, Attorney General Anil Nandlall has issued a stern warning to drivers who may be tempted to ignore the e-tickets generated by the system.

“These tickets are legally enforceable. Failure to pay or contest them in court will lead to further legal action. This is not optional,” Nandlall emphasized.

Under the SRIS, violations are either sent via SMS or email for drivers registered with the Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA) or delivered physically to the listed vehicle owner’s address.

Authorities say the system is designed to penalize and save lives, especially given the troubling rise in speeding-related road accidents.
