Fisherman missing after wave hits him while tending to hole in boat

A 45-year-old man is missing and feared to have drowned after the boat he was working on was “hit by a wave,” resulting in him drifting out to the sea, while the vessel sank near the Belladrum village, West Coast Berbice (WCB).

The missing man has been identified as Lloyd John of Catherine, Mahaicony, Region Five (Mahaica-Berbice).

HGP Nightly News understands that the incident occurred around 06:30h on Monday about three (3) miles off a shore at Belladrum, WCB.

Reports are that John was attending to a hole in the boat which he worked on with his fellow fisherman, 61-year-old Edmondad Duke, when the tragedy struck.

According to a police statement, while John was tending to the hole, he was hit by a wave and drifted further out to the sea while Duke escaped from the sinking boat and drifted West.

He was later rescued by men on a larger boat and then taken to the Abary Sluice Outpost where Duke reported the matter to the relevant authorities.

The boat and its engine were later retried on Tuesday but John has not been located to date.

Investigations are ongoing.
