Total cases now 124

Seven more coronavirus cases have been recorded in Guyana of which 6 males are infected. This was disclosed by Dr. Ertenisa Hamilton, Director of Primary Health Care Services on Monday’s COVID-19 Update.

In a previous briefing on April 19, the Ministry noted that more men are being infected with the disease. Since then, males have continued to account for the majority of the present 124 total cases.

“A clear indication that this disease continues to spread predominantly among men,” Dr. Hamilton mentioned.

Dr. Hamilton revealed that a total of 1,218 tests were conducted of which 1,094 persons tested negative. There are 69 active cases in institutional isolation, six persons in quarantine and three are in the COVID-19 Intensive Care Unit.

The virus has continued to spread to several communities along the coast and more recently, the Hinterland. Seven of the Ten Administrative Regions now have positive cases of the virus while central Georgetown continues to be the epicenter.

As of May 18, 2020, globally, there are 4,628,903 confirmed cases with more than 312,009 deaths. In the Region of the Americas the number of confirmed cases stands at 2,017 811 with 121,609 deaths.

The Public Health Ministry is reminding Guyanese to strictly adhere to all the necessary precautions to prevent the spread of the virus.
