7-year-old boy critically injured in Berbice accident

Seven-year-old Jayden Cheeffoon is in a critical condition after being involved in a motor vehicle accident on Sunday morning on the Lovely Lass Public Road, West Coast Berbice.

According to Police Headquarters, about 11:15 hrs on Sunday 13th February 2022, motorcar # HC 9812 was being driven by fifty-year-old Joseph Warde when the accident occurred. Warde claimed that he was proceeding west along the southern side of the road at about 75 kmph when the boy suddenly ran north across the road from behind a parked car and into his path.

The 50-year-old also claimed that he applied brakes but the front portion of his motorcar collided with the child and as a result of the collision the child fell onto the road surface and received injuries to his body.

He was picked up in an unconscious condition and taken to the Fort Wellington Public Hospital where he was seen and examined by a doctor on duty who treated and referred him to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital where he underwent further treatment and then transferred to the GPHC where he is now a patient in the ICU suffering from head injuries and a fractured shoulder.

A breathalyzer test conducted on the driver found no alcohol in his breath, however, a notice of intended prosecution has been served and he remains in custody assisting with further investigations.
