A 73-year-old housewife is now dead after she was allegedly struck down by a motorcar (# PRR 6925) while attempting to cross the Annandale Public Road, East Coast Demerara (ECD), early Saturday morning (today).
The deceased has been identified as Miriam Johnson of Lot 8 Eastville Housing Scheme, ECD.
HGP Nightly News understands that the fatal accident occurred around 06:00h and that the motorcar (# PRR 6935) was being driven by a 22-year-old fisherman of Unity village, ECD, at that time.
The young driver told the cops that he was proceeding East along the Northern side of the Annandale Public Road when he “observed the pedestrian standing in the centre of the said road.”
According to a police statement, the 22-year-old claimed that as he approached the area where Johnson had been standing, the elderly woman “ran North across the road into his path causing the left side front of his vehicle to collide with her.”
As a result of the collision, Johnson fell onto the road’s surface where she received injuries to her head and other parts of the body.
“She was picked up in an unconscious state by public-spirited citizens and taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital where she was seen and examined by a doctor on duty who pronounced her dead on arrival. Notice of intended prosecution was served on the driver who submitted to an alcohol breath test which read .00%BAC. He remains in custody as the investigation is in progress.”
