73-year-old woman is country’s latest COVID-19 related death

-death toll climbs to 246 in Guyana

Less than five (5) hours after reporting that two (2) COVID-19 related deaths occurred in Guyana, within the last 24 hours, another person who tested positive for COVID-19 is confirmed to have succumbed while receiving care at a Government medical facility.

This takes the total number of deaths attributed to COVID-19 in Guyana to 246.

According to a statement from the Ministry of Health (MOH), the latest COVID-19 related fatality is a 73-year-old female from Region Six (East Berbice-Corentyne).

“The MOH expresses sincerest condolences to the family of the deceased and will make every effort to provide all the necessary support during this difficult time to render any assistance needed.”

Hours ago, the Ministry reported that two (2) men, each of whom tested positive for COVID-19, died while receiving medical care at a Government facility.

One (1) of the males was identified as a 59-year-old from Region Seven (Cuyuni-Mazaruni) while the other is said to be a 44-year- old from Region Three (Essequibo Islands-West Demerara).

Between April 2, 2021 (Good Friday) and April 5, 2021 (today) Health authorities have recorded a total of 11 COVID-19 related deaths. Each of these individuals who were tested positive for COVID-19 died while receiving care at medical facilities.

The Ministry is appealing to the general public to respect the confidentiality of the deceased and his family and to allow them to mourn their tragic loss in peace. 

All Guyanese are reminded to observe the protocols of the COVID-19 EMERGENCY MEASURES (NO.16), which are in effect until April 30, 2021. This order emphasises:

▪  the need for correct and consistent use of a face mask when leaving your home; 

▪  the importance of maintaining the six feet physical distance from others;

▪  and the need for good hand-hygiene to help reduce the spread of COVID-19.
