9-year-old schoolgirl struck down on Pedestrian Crossing, Driver in custody

A 9-year-old schoolgirl of Tain Primary School, Corentyne Berbice was struck down by a hire car while on a pedestrian crossing on Miss Phobe Public Road, Corentyne on Wednesday evening.

At about 18:15hrs last evening, motorcar HD 848 was being driven by 54-year-old Junior Leitch of Lancaster Village, Corentyne; and was proceeding east along the northern drive lane when the 9-year-old pedestrian walked across the pedestrian crossing. Motor car HD 848 failed to brake in time and struck the schoolgirl who fell onto the road’s surface. Immediately thereafter, motorcar PWW 5659 that was being driven at the time by 22-year-old Shazeem Khan collided with the rear of motor car HD 848.

The schoolgirl received minor injuries about her body and was picked up by public-spirited citizens and taken to the Port Mourant Public .

Some good news however- on Thursday morning, the child was discharged from the hospital where she was examined by medical personnel for minor injuries received.

The scene was visited by Police who conducted a breathalyzer test on both drivers and the same read zero. The area was canvased for CCTV footage but none was seen. Both vehicles were lodged to be examined by a Licensing and Certifying Officer.

Investigations are ongoing.
