29-year-old Hanchan Basdeo, of of Lot 203 Foulis, East Coast Demerara lost his life following an accident on the Enmore access road on the East Coast of Demerara on Monday evening.
Police Headquarters reported that Motor Car # PYY 9583 driven by 27-year-old Titus Eastman struck down Basdeo who was riding a bicycle around 18:30hrs.
Eastman who was driving east along the northern side of the road while Basdeo was proceeding west; claimed that despite twice flashing his vehicle lights as well as using his horn, his vehicle and the cycle collided.
As a result of the collision, the pedal cyclist fell onto the road surface and received injuries about his body.
He was picked up in an unconscious condition by the driver of the said vehicle and was taken to the Nabaclis Health Centre, where he was seen and examined by a doctor on duty who treated him and referred him to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where he was further examined and admitted a patient in the ICU section suffering from injuries about the body. He later succumbed at the hospital (in the early hours of Tuesday morning).
Breathalyzer tests were conducted on the car driver but no trace of alcohol was found in his system.
The vehicle and bicycle were lodged to be examined by a Licensing and Certifying Officer.
The driver is in custody assisting with the investigation.
