AI CAN BE USED TO CHANGE AND COMBAT MISINFORMATION IN JOURNALISM – DR. BOYCE

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is not just a buzzword—it’s the future of journalism. That was the key message from Caribbean AI expert Dr. Don Boyce, who addressed members of the media during a recent Guyana Press Association event.

Dr. Boyce highlighted the exponential potential of AI to enhance journalism in Guyana and the wider Caribbean—emphasizing that AI and journalism can coexist in a meaningful and ethical way.

“Anything you do, including investigative journalism, will be revolutionized,” Dr. Boyce said, noting that AI could soon run complex investigations on its own.

The Power of Fact-Checking

One of the most significant ways AI can contribute to journalism, according to Boyce, is through fact-checking.

“You fact-check the AI, and you can also use AI to fact-check you,” he said.

This mutual verification process could significantly boost accuracy and credibility in journalism—especially at a time when misinformation is running rampant.

Misinformation and AI Misuse

Dr. Boyce also issued a warning: as powerful as AI is, it also poses serious risks if misused. He cautioned that governments and corporations could exploit AI for misinformation, manipulation, and power consolidation.

Although the Caribbean has yet to feel the full brunt of AI-fueled misinformation campaigns, Dr. Boyce stressed that now is the time to act.

“There’s a role for journalists in delivering bottom-up pressure to use AI ethically, promote transparency, and counter corruption,” he said.

Global Tools for Local Transparency

Boyce further explained that AI is already being used across the globe to increase transparency and combat data blocks—and the Caribbean must adopt these tools to stay ahead.

His message was clear: AI is not the enemy. With prudent use, training, and ethical oversight, it can be a game-changing asset for newsrooms across Guyana and the Caribbean.
