The Ministry of Education has announced plans to phase out all Primary School Tops nationwide. According to Minister of Education Priya Manickchand, the move is part of a broader strategy to modernize the education system and improve the quality of secondary education.
“Primary Tops”—classrooms attached to primary schools used to accommodate secondary-level students in areas without standalone secondary institutions—have long been a temporary solution to capacity challenges. However, Minister Manickchand stated that these arrangements are no longer suitable or sustainable for delivering quality secondary education.
The Ministry is now working to construct and expand proper secondary schools, especially in rural and hinterland communities, to ensure every child has access to a complete secondary education in a dedicated environment.
This move is expected to reduce overcrowding, improve student performance, and promote equity in access to educational resources.
