As Guyana prepares for the 2025 General and Regional Elections, a legal expert calls on authorities to strike a careful balance between advancing the country’s booming oil sector and ensuring robust electoral reforms—especially in light of concerns raised during the controversial 2020 elections.
The expert, speaking on condition of anonymity, emphasized that unresolved allegations of voter fraud from the last election must be addressed through strengthened systems, including biometric verification, updated voter lists, and greater transparency in the electoral process.
At the same time, the expert noted that while the oil economy has captured much of the national spotlight, equal attention must be paid to non-oil sectors and governance infrastructure to ensure long-term national stability.
The call comes amid ongoing coalition talks, voter education campaigns, and public concern over the credibility of upcoming polls. The expert cautioned that neglecting electoral integrity in favor of economic expansion could pose serious risks to democracy.
