Minister of Education Priya Manickchand announced on Tuesday that the highly anticipated ‘Because We Care’ cash grant will begin distribution on May 12th this year, with each student across the country set to receive $55,000.
Minister Manickchand announced the commissioning ceremony of the new Hopetown Practical Instruction Centre. Addressing attendees, the minister explained that this year’s distribution will see notable improvements to make the process smoother and more convenient.
“This year, every single child, beginning May 12th, will get $55,000 as their grant,” Minister Manickchand confirmed.
To facilitate easier collection, the Minister emphasized a new approach:
“We’re not grouping schools. This will happen in your school or the school your child was registered in as of March 28 this year,” she explained.
Minister Manickchand highlighted the significant advancements made within the education sector over recent years, reiterating the government’s commitment to providing quality education to all Guyanese children.
Turning her attention to Region Five, Minister Manickchand noted that the region has achieved universal access to secondary education, except the Mahaicony River area, which currently lacks a secondary school due to a low student population.
“We have 43 children at Karamat and 30-something at Gordon Table, and the understanding is you need at least 250 students for the children to have a wholesome secondary education,” Minister Manickchand stated.
She assured residents that despite the absence of a nearby secondary institution, the government continues to provide transportation by boat, enabling students to safely commute to schools outside their immediate communities.
