A New Amsterdam, Berbice man was busted on Sunday with 54.790 kilograms of marijuana hidden under a heap of sand in his motor canter.
Police have said that ranks from the Mahaica Police Station were on an anti-crime patrol in the vicinity of Helena 1, Public Road at Mahaica, East Coast Demerara (ECD) when they noticed a motor canter bearing registration GYY 8519, which was driven at a fast rate of speed heading west.
Police stopped the vehicle and there were three occupants, including the driver, along with a female and a toddler.
The ranks asked the driver to produce his documents, which he failed to do. He, however, produced a firearm and handed over a licence for it to the police.
He was escorted to the Mahaica Police Station, where it was observed that the vehicle had hollow blocks, sand and a wheelbarrow in the back of the tray.
A search was conducted under the sand, and it unearthed two bulky brown salt bags and two bulky transparent parcels of cannabis.
