A businessman, his wife and their two (2) daughters were assaulted and tied up by five (5) men who stormed into their residence on Sunday (yesterday), armed with guns and cutlasses, and robbed the family of over $1.8M in cash, jewellery and other valuables.
The armed robbery took place between 03:45h and 04:00h at the family’s La Parfaite Harmonie, West Bank Demerara (WBD) home.
According to a police statement, the bandits made good their escape with $710,000 GYD, $500 USD, two (2) Alcatel cellular phones worth $20,000, one (1) Samsung A50 cellular phone valued at $75,000, one (1) Samsung J20 cellular phone worth $20,000, one (1) LG cellular phone worth $41,000, one (1) Maxwell cellular phone valued at $13,000, one (1) Lenova laptop worth $100,000, two (2) Samsung tablets valued at $73,000 and one (1) portable DVD player worth $36,000.
The perpetrators also stole one (1) Playstation Three (3) with its control and a game valued at $85,000, one (1) laptop speaker box worth $75,000, two (2) speaker boxes valued at $12,000, five (5) wristwatches worth $90,000, one (1) wedding band worth $35,000, four (4) pairs of gold earrings valued at $50,000, two (2) silver foot chains worth $6,000, three (3) large silver rings valued at $65,000, one (1) silver band with the name “Alleyna” written in gold valued at $30,000, two (2) silver bands worth $8,000, one (1) gold chain with a pendant valued at $40,000 and 13 pieces of raw diamonds worth $130,000.
Reports are that the businessman and his family usually leave home on Sundays around 03:30h to conduct at the La Penitence Market.
During the time mentioned, he went downstairs to “start his vehicle when he observed muddy foot prints in his yard and became suspicious.”
According to a police statement, it was at this point he was approached by a gunman who allegedly pointed a firearm at him and ordered him not to say anything or move.
“Shortly after, he saw four other males in his yard under his house. Two of the males then tied him up, while the others went into the upper flat where they also tied up his wife and two daughters. The businessman was taken to the upper flat where the suspects demanded money and jewellery from the family and in the process he was beaten to the head with a gun while the wife was injured in the process.’
The suspects then made good their escape with the items and cash mentioned in an unknown direction.
