CJ rules Akawaio; Arekuna people do not have “exclusive right” to Upper Mazaruni lands.

Acting Chief Justice Roxane George, on Friday, ruled that the Akawaio and Arekuna people do not have “exclusive right” to lands in Region Seven (Cuyuni-Mazaruni), as was being contended by them in a case filed against the government since 1998, in which they had sought legal recognition of their rights to traditional and ancestral lands. Renatta Burnette has the details
