A 44-year-old man and his 53-year-old reputed wife were granted $50,000 bail each in court on Friday morning in connection with the discovery of a shotgun at a mining camp at Turasi Backdam, Cuyuni Mazaruni.
The accused couple, Sunil Singh and Monica Ramraj, were jointly charged with unlawful possession of firearm without a licence, police said in a press release on Friday.
They pleaded not guilty when they appeared at the Bartica Magistrate’s Court before Magistrate Ester Sam.
The matter was adjourned until August 13, 2021.
According to an earlier police press release, officers were on Wednesday, July 21 conducting searches on several dredge camps in the Middle Mazaruni area, when they discovered a “pump action shotgun” on the mining camp of the suspects, hidden beneath the mattress on a bed.
Police said the two suspects, who are not licensed firearm holders, were arrested.
