CRITCHLOW LABOR COLLEGE FIRE CAUSED BY OUTDATED ELECTRICAL PANELS THAT OVERHEATED

The Guyana Trades Union Congress (GTUC) has suffered a devastating setback following a massive fire that destroyed a significant section of the Critchlow Labour College over the weekend.

Fire officials have determined that the blaze was caused by an overheated, outdated electrical panel. The institution suffered extensive structural damage, including the complete loss of its auditorium and severe water damage throughout the building.

The affected facility also housed the University of Excellence, the Institute of Management and Business, and the Angela Applewhite Hercules Canteen, all severely impacted.

Minister of Home Affairs Robeson Benn, who visited the scene, stated that the government is committed to supporting a recovery plan and will engage in urgent discussions with GTUC General Secretary Lincoln Lewis and Head of Critchlow Labour College Dr. Ivor English to determine the way forward.

The loss of the Critchlow Labour College is being felt across Guyana’s labour and academic communities, as the institution has long been regarded as a pillar for worker education and empowerment.
