Drunk driver dies with occupant after car crash in Mahaicony

A drinking session at a friend’s house on Saturday, October 17 has resulted in the death of two persons from Mahaicony. Police in Regional Division #5 says that the incident took place some 11km in from Mahaicony Branch Road, East Coast Demerara where Deocharran Dass drove PFF 3940 at a fast rate when he reportedly failed to negotiate a sharp left turn, and instead continued straight into the canal which is situated on the southern side of the road. The width of the canal is approximately 65 feet, and the depth is about 15ft – 20ft.
The vehicle flipped over and was submerged in the canal. Vishan Motie, who was seated in the front passenger seat, managed to exit the vehicle. Unfortunately, the driver and the other occupant, Bhickram Singh were trapped. They were subsequently taken out in an unconscious state by public-spirited persons and rushed to the Mahaicony Public Hospital where they were seen and examined by a doctor on duty who pronounced both of them dead on arrival. The bodies are presently at the Mahaicony Public Hospital’s mortuary awaiting Post Mortem Examination.

The accident was reported to the police at 23:05hrs and ranks were on the scene at 23:15 hrs.
