Eight homeless following separate fires

Eight persons are homeless following two fires on Friday at Lot 54, Section A, Number 64 Village, Corentyne Berbice, and Lot 359, Block 12, Non-Pariel, East Coast Demerara (ECD).

Reports are that the Guyana Fire Service (GFS) received a call at 14:30h alerting them of the fire at Corentyne Berbice.

A water tender from the Corriverton Fire Station responded to the scene, where the structure involved was a two-storey wooden and concrete building.

The building was owned by Vilip Kumarnarine and occupied by 35-year-old Leonard Sandy and his family of four.

As a result of the fire, the building, and its contents were destroyed, leaving five persons homeless.

The fire resulted from faulty electrical wiring in the building, which resulted in arcing and sparking, igniting nearby combustibles.

Further, at approximately 17:51h, the GFS responded to a fire at Non-Pariel, ECD.

Water tenders and a water bowser from the Melanie, Mahaica, and Campbellville Fire Stations were dispatched to the location.

The structure involved was a one-flat wooden and concrete building owned by 56-year-old Sarju Ramgobin and occupied by 26-year-old Alex Adams and his family of three.

The building and its contents were destroyed by the time of the fire’s extinction, leaving four people homeless.

The purported cause of the fire was an electrical wire overloading, which caused the insulation to melt and ignite a foam mattress.
