Elderly man crushed to death by motor lorry after being pushed away from car at traffic lights

An 88-year-old pedestrian is now dead after he was allegedly pushed from standing at the side of a red motorcar when the traffic lights changed from ‘red’ to ‘green’ and landed under the trailer of a motor lorry (# GMM 3568) with Trailer (#TTT 5330) in the capital city.

Dead is Sandy Adonis of La Parfaite Harmonie, West Bank Demerara (WBD).

HGP Nightly News understands that at the time of the fatal accident, the motor lorry (#GMM) was being driven by another male resident of La Parfaite Harmonie, WBD.

Meanwhile, the cops are on the hunt for the red motorcar involved in the accident.

The fatal accident occurred around 16:10h on Thursday (yesterday) at Avenue of the Republic, Georgetown.

Reports are that the motor lorry (# GMM 3568) with Trailer (# TTT 5330) was proceeding South along the Avenue of the Republic and came to a halt at the traffic lights located at the intersection of the Avenue of the Republic and Regent Street.

According to a police statement, an eyewitness alleged that a red motorcar stopped alongside the trailer (#TTT 5330) of the motor lorry ( #GMM 3568), when Adonis approached the left front passenger side of the red vehicle and commenced chatting with the individual sitting in the said passenger seat.

“As the traffic light changed to green the motor lorry started to move off and the individual who was seated in the front passenger seat of the said red car, allegedly pushed the pedestrian who fell backwards, under the trailer which rolled over his body. As a result the 88 year-old man received injuries to his head and other parts of his body. An Ambulance was summoned which arrived shortly on the scene with medical personnel who pronounced him dead at the scene.”

HGP Nightly News understands that Adonis’ body was escorted to Lyken Funeral Parlour where it is presently awaiting a Post Mortem Examination (PME). “A breathalyzer test was conducted on the driver of the lorry and no trace of alcohol was found in his system. The driver remains in custody as further investigations are ongoing.
