ETHNIC RELATIONS COMMISSION (ERC) PLEADING FOR PATIENCE – JUDICIAL PROCESSES SHOULD BE GIVEN A CHANCE TO WORK

The Head of the Ethnic Relations Commission is pleading for calm and patience ahead of the outcome of the legal challenge against the No-Confidence motion. More in this report Handell Duncan.

Chairman of the Ethnic Relations Commission (ERC) Reverend John Smith agrees that even though the President and Opposition Leader have met, there remains some amount of uncertainty that continues to permeate the society. However, he thinks that it is necessary that all remain patient.

The ERC chairman made it clear that since the matter has been taken to the Court, the court should be given the opportunity to make a pronouncement.

With a newly reconstituted ERC, the body is preparing itself to play a major role at the polls, whenever that time comes. At the November 12, Local Government Elections Polls, even though, there were very few complaints the body seized the opportunity to test its capabilities.

Some $75M was trimmed from the ERC’s budget, this year. However, the constitutional agency intends to seek a supplementary provision in light of impeding elections to effectively execute its mandate
