Fire destroys house while caretaker was visiting neighbour

A male “caretaker” of a property owned by his relative who lives overseas is now counting his losses after a fire of unknown origin destroyed the dwelling house of octogenarian Agnes Wills at One Mile, Wismar, Linden on Monday (yesterday) afternoon.

The fire took place between 15:30h and 16:05h when the caretaker, Rudolph Wills, was not at home.

The man told the cops that he “secured the said house by means provided” and went to his neighbour’s yard which is about 30 meters away.

While there, he saw smoke emanating from the North Western side of the house, followed by fire.

He quickly ran over to the house – at which time the Western side of the house was engulfed in flames and the fire was ravaging throughout the home.

The Guyana Fire Service (GFS) was contacted and its ranks managed to contain then quickly extinguish the blaze upon their arrival at the scene, however, the house was completely destroyed by then.

An investigation is in progress.
