Firemen in Berbice save teacher’s home from burning to ashes

Swift action by firefighters prevented a teacher and a seaman from being homeless and suffering major expenses after a fire of unknown origin broke out at their Stanleytown, New Amsterdam, Berbice residence on Saturday (this) morning.

Twenty-eight-(28)-year-old teacher, Mehelia McAlmont, and 44-year-old seaman, Dexter Lucious, both reside at the two(2)-storeyed wooden and concrete structure which was in flames earlier today.

According to a statement from the Guyana Police Force, “one of the victims claimed that she was at home preparing for a birthday party for the following day when she observed smoke coming from the North-Western side of her apartment and raised an alarm.”

HGP Nightly News understands that the neighbor along with her landlord rushed out and attempted to douse the flames but this proved futile.

“The fire service was summoned and was able to extinguish the fire before it engulf further and did any major damage to the upper flat. The police was summoned, promptly responded and an investigation was launched.”
