Fishermen in police custody after cops unearth shotgun, ammo in unoccupied building

A 22-year-old fisherman of the # 63 Village, Berbice, along with his 26-year-old friend, another fisherman, of the #64 Village, Berbice, are now hot water following the discovery of a 16-gauge shotgun and ammunition on Saturday night after the cops noticed the two (2) men standing near a tree and subjected each of them to a search.

The incident occurred around 18:25h and policemen did not discover anything illegal on either of the two (2) men’s bodies. However, according to a statement from the Guyana Police Force (GPF), “acting on further information”, the two (2) fishermen allegedly led the party of cops to an unoccupied wooden and concrete structure in a fenced yard at the # 63 Village.

“On arrival, the fishermen pointed to a seven (7) feet concrete reservoir situated in the yard. A search was carried out and one white salt bag was seen on the said reservoir. The bag was opened in the presence of the two fishermen and one brown wooden-handle single-barrel 16 gauge shotgun was found inside.”

A black plastic bag was also found in the ‘salt bag’ where two (2) 16-gauge cartridges were found and as such, the two (2) fishermen were told of the offences committed, cautioned and arrested.

“They were escorted along with the firearm and ammunition to the Springlands Police Station. The firearm and ammunition were dusted for latent fingerprints by a rank from the Crime Scene Unit. The firearm and ammunition were marked, sealed and lodged in the presence of the two suspects,” the GPF statement added.

Investigations continue.
