At his weekly press conference on Thursday, Vice-President Bharrat Jagdeo stated that his government is not obligated to consult with Amerindians to pass laws in parliament. This statement follows Opposition Member of Parliament Vincent Henry’s call for repealing the recently passed Petroleum Activities Act. Henry argues that the Act ignores the principle of Free Prior Informed Consent (FPIC) of indigenous peoples regarding oil and gas activities.
