GECOM IN DISARRAY, ALERT URGES ELECTIONS BODY TO PUTS IT’S HOUSE IN ORDER AHEAD OF ELECTIONS

By Antonio Dey | HGPTV Newsroom

Member of Parliament Beverly Alert is voicing serious concern over the current state of the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM), declaring that the body—constitutionally mandated to oversee free and fair elections—has become compromised since the last electoral cycle.

Alert criticized the Commission’s lack of transparency and accountability and questioned its readiness and impartiality ahead of the 2025 General and Regional Elections.

“We are deeply worried that the only body entrusted to administer elections in Guyana has lost public trust. GECOM must be reformed if we are to preserve democratic integrity,” the MP stated.

Alert’s comments come as political tensions rise and preparations for the next election cycle begin. She called for greater scrutiny, reforms, and oversight to restore credibility to the Commission’s operations.

Her statements reflect growing concerns from sections of the opposition and civil society over GECOM’s internal processes, especially in light of past controversies surrounding election results, voter lists, and tabulation procedures.
