A 17-year-old girl is dead, and her 16-year-old sister is battling for her life following an accident on the Coldingen Public Road, East Coast Demerara (ECD) on Friday.

Dead is Bibi Sophia Mohammed of Lot 366 Non-Pariel, Railway Embankment, ECD, while Bibi Sophia Mohammed, 16, was injured.

The accident, which occurred at 17:30h, involved an electric bike, which the sisters were on, and motor lorry GRR 3130, driven by Rickford Beckles, 67.

Reports are that the motor lorry was proceeding north along the western side of the Public Road when the driver alleged that he approached the main road, stopped, and observed the traffic before going onto the access road.

The driver said that when he drove off, he felt his lorry “bump up,” and when he came out, he saw two girls lying on the road next to an electric bike.

Persons rushed to the scene, and the girls were picked up and escorted to Georgetown Public Hospital, where Sophia was pronounced dead.

The 16-year-old is receiving medical treatment. The lorry driver is in custody, assisting with the investigation.
