The Government of Guyana has firmly rejected Venezuela’s latest attempt to misrepresent the 1966 Geneva Agreement, following a recent letter from Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro to the United Nations Secretary-General.
In his letter, President Maduro reportedly sought to portray the Geneva Agreement as supporting Venezuela’s claims to Guyana’s Essequibo region. Guyana swiftly responded, describing Maduro’s interpretation as “factually incorrect, misleading, and without basis.”
Guyana reaffirmed its position that the agreement was intended to peacefully resolve the border controversy, not to validate Venezuela’s territorial claims.
“Venezuela’s continuous distortion of historical facts threatens regional stability and undermines the international legal process,” a senior Guyanese official stated.
Guyana reiterated its ongoing commitment to the ongoing judicial process before the International Court of Justice (ICJ), emphasizing that a final legal ruling remains the appropriate means of resolving the border dispute.
The government maintains its call for international solidarity and support to ensure that Venezuela respects international law and agreements.
