Historic Joint Press Conference by President Dr Mohamed Irfaan Ali and U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio Strengthens Bilateral Ties

In a landmark event, the United States Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, and the President of the Cooperative Republic of Guyana, Dr Mohamed Irfaan Ali, held a joint press conference today highlighting the growing bilateral partnership between the two nations. The press briefing addressed several critical issues, including regional security, economic collaboration, energy cooperation, climate change initiatives, and democratic governance.

Secretary Rubio emphasized the United States’ commitment to supporting Guyana’s burgeoning economic growth, especially in the oil and gas sector. “Guyana represents tremendous opportunities, not only economically but strategically, and the United States stands ready to support this nation’s sustainable development and security,” Rubio remarked.

President Ali welcomed Secretary Rubio’s visit, noting the critical importance of the partnership between Guyana and the U.S. in addressing regional security concerns, particularly regarding Venezuela’s territorial claims on Guyana’s Essequibo region. “Our friendship with the United States remains pivotal as we continue to defend our territorial integrity and sovereignty,” said President Ali.

Both leaders reaffirmed their dedication to democratic governance, transparency, and accountability, with Secretary Rubio commending Guyana’s commitment to electoral reforms and anti-corruption measures.

President Ali highlighted Guyana’s ongoing efforts on climate change through its Low Carbon Development Strategy (LCDS), emphasizing that collaboration with international partners like the United States is essential to achieving global environmental goals.

The joint press conference concluded with both leaders expressing optimism about the future of Guyana-U.S. relations, underscoring the strategic significance of strengthened diplomatic ties, mutual respect, and economic cooperation between the two countries.
