driver had been ‘overtaking’ vehicle when accident took place

A 61-year-old housewife was killed last evening along the Chateau Margot, East Coast Demerara (ECD) Public Road after a motorcar (PKK 9991) slammed into her while she had been attempting to cross the roadway.

The deceased has been identified as Bibi Zalima Subrattie called “Patsy” of Pigeon Island Squatting Area, ECD.

At the time of the accident, the car was being driven by a rank of the Special Constabulary.

Reports are that around 18:15h, motorcar (PKK 9991) was proceeding East along the Northern driving lane on the Northern carriageway along the Chateau Margot Public Road when he changed lanes in order to “overtake” a vehicle that was proceeding on the same lane.

He alleged that while he was in the process of doing this, he “suddenly” noticed Subrattie quickly stepping off the median and into his path. According to the Special Constabulary rank, he immediately tried to swerve left to avoid a collision but the right side front of his vehicle hit Subrattie. As a result of the impact, she then fell to the road surface where she received several injuries about her body.

The ambulance was summoned and paramedics examined the motionless woman on the ground before contact was made to the Lyken Funeral home.

Subrattie was then escorted to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) where she was pronounced dead.

Her body is currently at the Lyken Funeral Parlour where it awaits a Post Mortem Examination (PME).

Meanwhile, a breathalyzer test conducted on the driver revealed no trace of alcohol in his system. He is presently in police custody and said to be assisting with investigations.
