With the annual National Toshaos Council (NTC) Conference scheduled for May 19 to 23, all eyes are on whether the event will provide a genuinely inclusive platform for Indigenous leaders to voice key national concerns.
The conference, which brings together Toshaos from across Guyana’s Indigenous communities, is meant to highlight issues such as land rights, education, health services, infrastructure, and the impacts of extractive industries on Indigenous territories.
However, as the date approaches, questions are being raised about whether all leaders—especially those with dissenting or critical views—will have equal opportunity to speak freely and influence policy.
Advocates are calling for meaningful dialogue, not just ceremonial participation, emphasizing that the NTC Conference must serve as more than a formality if Guyana is to advance proper inclusive governance.
