Intoxicated hammer-wielding vendor dead after allegedly sustaining wound from cutlass during fight

A 64-year-old vendor is now dead after he was allegedly cut to his hand with a cutlass by another man whose yard he (now deceased) had rushed into with a hammer in his hand while under the influence of alcohol and issued threats before attacking the suspect with the hammer.

The dead man has been identified as Omkar Kishundyal of Canal No. 2 Polder, West Bank Demerara (WBD).

HGP Nightly News understands that the incident occurred at the Belle West village, WBD, on Sunday (yesterday).

Reports are that around 14:30 h, Kishundyal went to the suspect’s home with a hammer and began to behave disorderly while threatening to kill him and his family over a job which the suspect’s father was supposed to execute at his (Kishundyal’s) home.

According to a police statement, the now dead man ran into the suspect’s yard and used his hammer to deal some blows to the man.

“The suspect then picked up a chair and was barring when the deceased held on to the said chair and began to wrestle with the suspect. The suspect released the chair and armed himself with a  cutlass which was nearby while the victim retrieved the hammer and rushed back into the suspect.

The suspect alleged that he raised the cutlass to bar the hammer and during that time, the deceased sustained a cut to his right hand after which the deceased retreated from the suspect’s premises before collapsing some six hundred (600) feet away.”

He was rushed to the West Demerara Regional Hospital, West Coast Demerara (WCD), where he was medically examined and later died.

“The suspect – who was at the Wales Police Station filing a report – was arrested and is presently in custody. The body is presently at the Ezekiel Funeral Parlor awaiting a Post Mortem Examination (PME).”
