-Some 37 persons awaiting trial.
Esplanade Road, New Amsterdam was once again the center of ceremonial glory at the commencement of the October 2014 session of the Berbice High Court. The ceremony was held in front of the Berbice High court building and was led by Officer Hamer, with inspection being done by Inspector Davidson. A 27-man contingent put on an illustrative display with musical accompaniment being given by the Police Force Drum Corps.
The presiding Judge for the Criminal session will be Justice James Bovell-Drake, who also inspected the Guard of Honour at the ceremony. Justice Sandra Kurtzious will be in charge of the Civil Session in the Berbice High Court. Brian Joseph, Commander of ‘B’ Division, led the team of officers that served as escorts to the judges. Other high ranking officers of the Guyana Police Force were also present at the opening ceremony.
Some 37 persons are currently behind bars awaiting adjudication. The majority of them are to be arraigned for murder, with 31 persons out of the 37 facing this charge. Some of the accused are reportedly willing to enter their pleas. The charges of carnal knowledge, unlawful wounding and possession of a firearm without a licence, appear singly, with one person each being charged. Three of the 37 persons are to be tried for sexual penetration acts as the session continues.
