Labourer feared to have drowned while bathing with friend in creek

A 20-year-old labourer is now missing and feared to have drowned when he accompanied his friend to a creek in Mabura for them to “bathe” but failed to surface from the water after a lengthy period of going under.

The missing young man has been identified as Akeem Davidson of Retrieve, Mackenzie, Linden.

HGP Nightly News understands that the incident occurred on Tuesday (yesterday) around 14:15h.

According to a police statement, on the date and time in question, Davidson and his friend, Sheldon Vanaco, visited a creek located about 300 meters from their camp, which is located about five (5) kilometres from the Mabura Police Outpost.

While they were swimming in the said creek, it is alleged that the Davidson “went down in the creek” and did not surface.

“Sheldon further stated that he shouted to Akeem (the victim) telling him to stop playing but fifteen minutes elapsed and he got no response from Akeem. He then went back to camp and alerted Ephraim Benn – the camp owner – of what transpired and they both went in search of Akeem but same was futile. Police were dispatched to the area in search of the victim and as of midnight last night, the search came up empty-handed.”

Both Vanaco and Benn are in police custody assisting with the investigations.
