Mounting public pressure is being directed at Charles Ramson Sr., who currently serves as Guyana’s Commissioner of Information. Protesters are calling for his immediate removal over alleged Access to Information Act violations.
On Thursday, a picketing exercise was staged outside Ramson’s East Street residence, which also doubled as the Commissioner’s official office. Demonstrators, including civil society advocates and transparency activists, claimed that Ramson has repeatedly failed to fulfill his statutory duties, denying or delaying access to public information requests.
“The role of Commissioner of Information is to promote transparency, not to hide behind closed doors and curtains,” one protester told HGPTV.
Critics say Ramson’s lack of public engagement, delayed reporting to the National Assembly, and physical inaccessibility to the media and citizens directly contradict the very mandate the office was created to uphold.
Calls for his resignation or replacement are growing louder, with civil society groups urging the government to appoint someone more accountable and proactive in promoting the public’s right to information.
