LGE “ON THE CARD” FOR GOV’T THIS YEAR

Minister of Local Government and Regional Development, Nigel Dharamlall announced that Local Government Elections (LGE) will be held this year.

Some $4.1 billion dollars has been budgeted for the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) for the holding of these elections. He made this announcement during his budget debate on Friday.

However, the Minister alleged that Opposition Nominated GECOM Commissioners are “threatening the conduct of Local Government Elections”. He hinted that they have been making efforts to delay the LGE in 2022.

In 2021, he had said that LGE was slated to commence before the year came to a close. However, that did not come to fruition. The Minister also confirmed that the People’s Progressive Party/Civic allocated monies in the 2021 budget. He did not announce the amount.

The government initially argued that GECOM, at that time was not in a position to proceed with the LGE, which caused the delay.
