A 53-year-old woman from Block 42 Amelia’s Ward, Linden, died on Wednesday, one day after she was beaten at the hands of her reputed husband for taking his money to purchase alcohol.
Dead is Bibi Shirah Bhagpattie. HGP Nightly News understands that Bhagpattie and her reputed husband would normally engage in heated arguments, and he would frequently assault her.
Reports are that at about 13:00h on Tuesday, the suspect accused Bhagpattie of taking $500 from his pants pocket without his knowledge to purchase alcohol.
This resulted in a heated argument, during which the suspect claimed that the woman “chucked” him in the chest.
In retaliation, the suspect dealt the 53-year-old woman a slap and a cuff to her face, causing her to receive injuries.
The victim then left home and went to her relatives, where she told them what transpired. She later returned to her Amelia’s Ward home.
The following day, at around 16:30 h, the suspect contacted one of the woman’s family and informed them that she was not moving.
A relative went to the house, where she observed the woman lying on her back with a towel wrapped around her. The relative immediately alerted other family members in the area, and the matter was reported to the Police.
The woman’s body was examined, and Police said her face was “black and blue and swollen.”
The body was escorted to the Mackenzie Hospital Complex and pronounced dead on arrival by a doctor. The body is at the G-Jetsco Mortuary, awaiting a post-mortem Examination. Investigations are ongoing.
