Local Government Minister secures $1M station bail after arrest over rape allegations

Minister of Local Government and Regional Development, Nigel Dharamlall was on Monday night released on $1 million station bail and instructed to return to the Brickdam Police Station on Tuesday.

The Minister was arrested on Monday, days after a 16-year-old schoolgirl accused him of sexually assaulting her in December 2022.

Following outrage by various sections of society, calling for a thorough probe into the allegations, the Guyana Police Force (GPF) said an investigation had been launched on Monday.

In fact, Dharamllall has retained Hughes, Fields & Stoby to represent him and protect his interests amid the allegations. In fact, he denied the allegations levelled against him by the schoolgirl.

The Minister had requested to proceed on administrative leave to allow for a probe, which President Irfaan Ali had granted.

Moreover, members of civil society and the Opposition organised a picketing exercise in front of the Ministry of Local Government and Regional Development on Monday, calling for Dharamllall to go.

Besides, the Amerindian People’s Association (APA) has strongly appealed to President Ali, urging him to ensure an independent investigation into the rape allegations against Minister Dharamlall.

Recognising the seriousness of the allegations, the APA emphasises the need for a thorough and unbiased inquiry to ensure justice and maintain public trust.
