Man dies after tractor turns turtle in rice field

-pinned under water while “ramping” rice

A 59-year-old man who would operate a tractor in the rice fields to earn a daily living is now dead after the vehicle turned turtle and pinned him underwater.

The deceased has been identified as tractor operator, Sasenarine Persaud called “Narine”, of Leguan Island, Region Three (Essequibo Islands-West Demerara).

The fatal incident occurred around 10:30h today at the Waterloo Backdam, Leguan Island.

Reports are that around 07:30h, Persaud collected the motor tractor (290 Massy Ferguson  # 18430)  and headed into the Waterloo BackDam to “ramp” his employer’s rice field.

While he was working there, the tractor turned turtle in the center of the rice field, pinning the now deceased underneath about two feet of water.

According to another operator who was operating his tractor about 300 feet away, he noticed the mishap and immediately then made contact with the owner of the rice field.
The matter was then reported to the police.

Public spirited citizens comverged at the area as the news quickly spread and they managed to remove the tractor.

However, by then, a lot of time hqd elapsed. Persaud was taken to the Leguan Cottage Hospital, West Coast Demerara, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

The man’s body is presently lying at the hospital’s mortuary awaiting a Post Morterm Examination (PME).

Meanwhile, investigations into the matter are currently underway.
