A 46-year-old man has been jailed for wounding another over an old grievance

Stephen Rodrigues appeared before Magistrate Christel Lambert in the Bartica Magistrate’s Court and pleaded guilty to a felonious wounding charge.

The charge stated that on June 3, 2023, at Bartica Arcade, Essequibo River, he unlawfully and maliciously wounded Devon Assaye with the intent to maim, disfigure, or cause him actual bodily harm.

After pleading guilty to the charge, the Magistrate sentenced Rodrigues to 12 months imprisonment.

HGP Nightly News had reported that Assaye was chopped to the left hand by Rodrigues at about 16:30h on June 3.

The injured man was rushed to the Bartica Public Hospital, where he was treated. Rodrigues was later arrested by Police.
