Man remanded for fatally stabbing taxi driver during row over $500 change

A 28-year-old taxi driver of Mocha, who had fatally stabbed his best friend to death during a row over $500 change, was on Monday slapped with a murder charge.

Troy Griffith, of Lot 6 ‘B’ Carol’s Place Mocha, East Bank Demerara, appeared before Magistrate Sunil Scarce at the Diamond/Golden Grove Magistrate’s Court.

He was not required to plead to the indictable charge, which stated that on September 14, 2022, at Mocha Access Road and Providence Public Road, East Bank Demerara, he murdered 42-year-old Quincy Weekes.

He was remanded to prison until November 18, 2022.

According to reports, the incident occurred around 8:15 hrs at Mocha Access Road.

The two men who are known to each other would operate private hire taxis at the Mocha road head on a daily basis.

It is alleged that sometime back, the deceased and the suspect had a misunderstanding over $500.

However, on the day in question, Weeks and Griffith were at the Mocha Road Head plying their trade when an argument ensued over parking.

It was then that the suspect armed himself with a knife and dealt Weekes several stab wounds about his body.

Weekes collapsed and was pronounced dead on the scene by a doctor.q
