On Monday, Twenty-eight-year-old Nizam Persaud was charged with stabbing Guyana Defence Force (GDF) Corporal Chaves Mangal to death during his sister’s wedding on March 13, 2022. Persaud of Good Hope Squatting Area, East Coast Demerara (ECD), was remanded to prison when he appeared in court before Magistrate Fabayo Azore. He was not required to plea.
The matter was adjourned to 13th May 2022 for statements.
According to a police report on the day in question, Mangal was attacked by Persaud and three others.
On the day in question, the suspects were reportedly drinking alcohol when one of them approached the DJ enquiring about the music that had stopped. According to an eyewitness report, one of the suspects pulled a knife from his waist and stabbed Mangal to his right upper chest.
The eyewitness confronted the suspect and as a result was stabbed to his left hand before making good their escape.
Mangal was rushed to the Balwant Singh Hospital and later died while receiving medical treatment on the 14th.
