A 42-year-old labourer, whom the cops nabbed with ‘ganja’ in his pockets while he was standing on the roadway late last night, was hauled before the Court this morning but plead “not guilty” despite giving a confession to the cops during his arrest.
Steve Pearson, who hails from Tabatinga, Lethem, Region Nine (Upper Takutu-Upper Essequibo), appeared before Magistrate Allan Wilson at the Lethem Magistrate’s Court today where he denied the charge laid against him.
Reports are that on Sunday around 22:15h, a group of policemen were patrolling the Tabatinga area when they observed Pearson standing on the road.
Given the fact that the man had violated the COVID-19 curfew in place, they conducted a search on him and discovered a transparent plastic bag containing a quantity of cannabis seeds and stems.
Pearson was told of his offence in relation to the illicit substance, and according to the police, he admitted ownership of the ‘ganja’ after being cautioned.
He was then arrested and taken to the Lethem Police Station where the suspected cannabis was weighed in his presence and amounted to 44 grammes.
However, less than 12 hours later while in the Courtroom, Pearson denied such.
As such, the Magistrate granted bail in the sum of $75,000 and fixed the next hearing for his case on June 15, 2020.
