In a major step aimed at strengthening and promoting Guyana’s seabob shrimp sector, the Government of Guyana has officially partnered with the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) and the International Labour Organisation (ILO) to launch the FISH4ACP initiative.
The launch marks the commencement of a comprehensive programme aimed at ensuring the sustainability, profitability, and resilience of the seabob shrimp industry—one of Guyana’s critical fisheries sectors. The initiative, which is part of a global effort known as FISH4ACP (Fish for African, Caribbean, and Pacific Countries), seeks to promote sustainable fisheries and aquaculture value chains, and enhance economic benefits while safeguarding biodiversity.
At the official launch, stakeholders highlighted that the seabob shrimp sector is not only important for economic growth but also essential for employment and food security across coastal communities in Guyana. Officials emphasized the importance of implementing responsible fishing practices, robust environmental protection standards, and inclusive labour policies that ensure fair employment conditions for all workers involved in the industry.
Through this initiative, the Government of Guyana, FAO, and ILO will collaborate closely with local fisherfolk, private-sector actors, and community representatives to introduce best practices, strengthen governance frameworks, provide training, and foster technological innovation.
According to government officials, these strategic measures will position Guyana as a leading example of sustainability and economic growth within the fisheries sector, significantly enhancing livelihoods and local economies.
