Motorcyclist succumbs following collision near Botanical Gardens

A motorcyclist who was involved in a serious accident with a 13-year-old pedestrian on Wednesday succumbed to his injuries while undergoing emergency treatment at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC).

The accident occurred at about 16:30hr on Nelson Mandela Avenue in the vicinity of the Botanical Gardens in Georgetown.

It involved a motorcycle #CJ 4459 owned and driven by Thakur Rajnarine, of Lot 76 Sheriff Street Campbellville, Georgetown; and a 13-year-old pedestrian of John Street, Campbellville.

Enquires disclosed that motorcycle #CJ 4459 was proceeding south on the eastern drive lane of Nelson Mandela Avenue while the pedestrian was crossing the said road going from west to east. As the pedestrian was in the center of the eastern drive lane, the front of the motorcycle came into contact with the pedestrian.

As a result of the collision, both the motorcyclist and the pedestrian fell onto the road surface where they received injuries about their bodies.

They were both picked up by public-spirited citizens and were transported to the Georgetown Public Hospital where they were seen and examined by a doctor on duty. The pedestrian was treated for pain in the body and sent away while Thakur Rajnarine, the motorcyclist, was treated for abrasions and head injuries and later admitted a patient in the GPHC’s Accident and Emergency Unit.

A few hours later, at about 22:10hrs last night, Thakur Rajnarine succumbed to his injuries while receiving treatment at the hospital.

His body is currently lying in the Memorial Gardens Funeral Home awaiting a post-mortem examination.
Investigations are ongoing.
