-teenage friend says persons refused to help transport bleeding youth to hospital
A 19-year-old construction worker is now dead after he was allegedly chopped with a cutlass by another teenager who had been standing next to him at Bus-Shed Street, in Anna Catherina, West Coast Demerara (WCD) late Sunday night.
The deceased has been identified as Sanjay Hanoman of Fourth Street, Anna Catherina, WCD.
HGP Nightly News understands that the incident took place around 23:30h yesterday (Sunday) and was reportedly witnessed by a friend of the now deceased construction worker.
Reports are that Hanoman and the suspect were standing at Bus-Shed Street, when the suspect, who is said to have been carrying a cutlass in his hand, fired a chop to Hanoman’s leg and rode away from the scene on a bicycle.
According to a 17-year-old youth, who told the cops that he was Hanoman’s friend, said, “I was passing by and saw the suspect with an object, which appeared to be a cutlass in his hand, and saw him rub the said object against the deceased’s left thigh who then fell to the ground”.
A press release from the Guyana Police Force (GPF) stated that the 17-year-old quickly rushed over to aid his injured friend and noticed Hanoman’s leg bleeding profusely.
According to the police, the 17-year-old tried to get help to rush the injured Hanoman to a medical facility “but was unable to do so by himself since no one else was willing to help transport [the victim] to the hospital.”
About one hour later, assistance was finally given to the teenager and Hanoman was conveyed to the Leonora Cottage Hospital, WCD.
However, by the time they arrived at the medical facility, it was too late. The 19-year-old construction worker was pronounced dead by the Doctor on duty.
Meanwhile, investigators visited the suspect’s home where they located the young man and he was immediately arrested.
He is currently in police custody as the probe into Hanoman’s death continues.
