North West man feared dead after colliding with father’s boat in Aruka River

Terry La Cruz, 26, of Aruka River, North West District (NWD), is feared dead after he collided with his father’s metal boat in the Aruka River on Sunday.

Reports are that at about 21:15h, Percy Thomas was returning home from church in his boat with his wife, Monica La Cruz, 43, and two daughters, ages 17 and 16 years when he stated that he heard what sounded like a boat and engine heading in his direction.

He then flashed his torchlight to indicate his position in the river. However, the boat continued in their direction and subsequently crashed into the right-side mid-area of his boat.

As a result of the impact, he lost control of his boat, which began to drift in different directions.

Thomas then lit the torch on the boat that collided with his and observed that it was his son, La Cruz.

He then made checks for his son, but he was not seen and was suspected of having fallen into the river.

An alarm was raised, and persons in the area responded with boats, and they began to comb the river in search of La Cruz, but to no avail.

A report was made at Mabaruma Police Station. Several persons were questioned, and a search is in progress as investigations continue.
