A 26-year-old off-duty policeman and a 28-year-old male are now in custody after they were busted by ranks transporting 231 grams of marijuana on the Stanleytown Public Road, West Bank Demerara (WBD) on Wednesday, police said in a news release.
The incident occurred around 7 p.m.
Acting on information received, police said a mobile patrol in the vicinity of Stanleytown Public Road, WBD, stopped motorcar PZZ 3217 after a bulky parcel was seen by the ranks thrown out of the motor car by the occupant.
Police said the car — with both occupant and driver — was escorted to the abandonment area, where they found a black bulky parcel.
“On opening the said parcel it was observed to contain a quantity of leaves, seeds and stems suspected to be cannabis sativa.
“Both men were arrested and told of the offence, cautioned and gave their names. The 28-year-old male claimed ownership of the parcel but refused to give a statement.
“The driver claims he is an off-duty policeman who works private hire taxi on his off-duty hours.
“They were escorted to the La Grange Police Station where the suspected narcotics was weighed in their presence and it amounted to 231 grams,” the police release stated.
The main suspect was placed into custody while the policeman was placed under close arrest.
